Mathematics

Students at Leongatha Secondary College have the opportunity to study mathematics subjects through to Year 12.

Year 7 & 8

In both Year 7 and Year 8, students study a common mathematics curriculum. Within the courses there are activities that extend the more talented students. Activities are modified for those students who need support. The topics include geometry, measurement, fractions, algebra and data. There is an emphasis on number skills as well as problem solving skills. Students are able to build a strong foundation for their future study of mathematics. All students participate in the Maths Mate homework program.

Year 9 & 10

In Year 9 mathematics students have the opportunity to work through a more individualised program that caters to their strengths and weaknesses. Topics are broken into shorter more intensive units and short projects and assignments feature prominently. Self-assessment is embedded into the program.

In Year 10 three courses are offered. They are Workplace Maths, Core Maths and Advanced Maths. Students undertake one of these courses and are guided by their level of ability, career aspirations, work ethic and teacher recommendation.
